Project Scope

Exelon Generation contracted Graycor Industrial to construct a 350-megawatt gas turbine, simple-cyle peaker power plant in Chicago. The project – completed by Graycor in partnership with JWP/Hyre Electric Co. and AMS Mechanical Systems – added power generation capacity to the City of Chicago, while helping to rejuvenate the city’s southeast industrial corridor. Work consisted of installing eight General Electric 6B combustion turbines, a switchyard; a power distribution center building and an operations building. Peoples Energy Resources Corp. supplied natural gas.

The project, known as the Southeast Chicago Energy Project, was a joint effort by Exelon Generation and Peoples Energy Resources Corp.’s (PERC) Power Generation team, a subsidiary of Peoples Energy.

The plant was constructed on a site approximately 10 miles from downtown Chicago.

Sargent & Lundy provided design, procurement of balance-of-plant equipment, permitting, startup and commissioning services for the plant.
