Project Scope

Graycor was selected to complete a two-phase renovation to the outdoor common areas of upscale mall, Oakbrook Center, in Oak Brook, Illinois. The live environment, phased project refreshes the elegant shopping center for it’s 50th anniversary. The project required selective demolition and renovation of walkways, utilities, planters, water features, curbs, lighting, landscape and seating, all while minimizing impact to shoppers and retailers.

Graycor’s experience and thorough knowledge of live-environment planning went into the development of the detailed phasing and logistics plan. More than just cosmetic improvements, this renovation addresses underground utilities to ensure trouble-free operations for years to come. The walkways and the underlying mechanical systems have been replaced in major areas of the mall. Excavation to depths of up to 20 feet between operating stores was required to accomplish the utility work.

The project also enhanced common areas, provided additional pavillions and included the redevelopment of a 91,634-square-foot anchor space that provides for additional speciality shops – all of which further enhances the center’s appeal.

The 2-million-square-foot modernized shopping center is the largest open-air shopping center in the U.S. and continues to grow its contemporary amenities for shopping and community events.
