Cabot Microelectronics, the worldâ€™s leading supplier of chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries to the semiconductor industry, selected Graycor for the preconstruction and design/build of their 500 buildingâ€™s reconfiguration. Cabot wanted to make better use of the buildingâ€™s space, and to update the mechanical and electrical systems to support the demands of equipment and technology.
The new design included a 5,790-SF classroom; a 1,000-SF clean room for new grooving, cleaning and inspection; a 1,356-SF classroom, a 10,000-SF clean room for finished goods; and a 1,300-SF classroom for laminating. Work also included the relocation and expansion of a laminating line, the build-out of 40 new workstations and eight offices, upgrading the MEP system for the entire building and reconfiguring remaining space into a high-bay warehouse.
The building remained occupied during construction, so the preconstruction planning was critical to the success of this project. Existing structures and future needs were both considered in the reconfiguration design. Not all equipment decisions had been finalized before the start of construction. By adopting a flexible approach to the design and construction of the reconfigured structure, the Graycor team was able to complete the project on time for the owner.
