Project Scope

Graycor Industrial’s team performed various repairs to Blast Furnace No. 14 at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works facility. Work for the furnace proper included: rough scale-down; repair and replacement of 64 copper staves and associated piping, hearth wall lining, hearth bottom, tuyere assemblies and coolers, and above burden probes; installation of blow-in lining, and dry-out.

Work for the casthouse included performing structural and refractory repairs to #01 taphole/trough area and repairing and replacing reconditioned mud guns and tap drills.

The project also included installing additional recirculation cooling water pump and associated piping , as well as making numerous shell modifications to the stave.

Graycor’s blasting team also provided hydroblasting, sand blasting and vacuum services on the project to remove a large salamander in the furnace as well as buildup in the dust collector.
