Chicago area-based Wickes Furniture chose Graycor to provide construction services for seven of the retailer’s store projects throughout California and Illinois. Five of the projects consisted of new ground-up construction and two were interior renovations, with project locations of Corona, Santa Clarita and Oxnard, Calif., as well as Batavia, Chicago, Lake Zurich and Schaumburg, Ill.
Particular challenges unique to managing projects simultaneously in greatly distanced locations include the need to maintain each project’s efficiencies, adhere to demanding schedules and coordinate efforts of all involved parties. As a solution, Graycor’s California and Illinois project teams focused on communication and, therefore, continually shared information to increase each project’s efficiencies; exercised quick problem-solving skills to keep the projects on schedule; and met regularly to keep each project’s numerous key players well-informed at all times.
The seven projects’ principal parties included: two owners, four owners’ representatives, six developers, three architects and six title companies. In addition, plans varied from one project to another with some being single-story facilities, some two-story and others interior build-outs.
Project schedules for most of the stores range on average from four to six months with square footage ranging from 36,000 to 60,000.
