Hydrogen Plant Construction
Graycor Industrial Constructors Inc. is nearing completion of construction of a new hydrogen plant for Praxair at its Whiting, Ind., facility. The multimillion-dollar project will enable Praxair to supply hydrogen to BP’s Whiting, Ind., refinery. BP, one of the world’s largest oil and gas firms, will use the hydrogen in production of ultra-low-sulfur gasoline and diesel fuels. The new plant will serve to refine the oil sands being shipped from Canada to BP’s Whiting refinery. In addition, the plant will also supply hydrogen to other customers in northern Indiana.
Praxair is the largest industrial gases company in North and South America and one of the largest worldwide. Work at the brownfield project site, where coke battery foundations once existed, began in April 2008 and will reach final completion in early September 2010. The project calls for Graycor Industrial’s team to construct two steam methane reformers (SMRs), as well as an office/maintenance building, a water purification building, pressure swing adsorption structures and multiple pre-engineered metal buildings. The project scope also includes site work, underground utilities, foundations, rotating equipment, structural steel, complete piping and electrical/control systems.
