GARY, IN (September 2009) — In February 2009, Graycor Industrial opened a fabrication shop in Gary, Ind. To date, key projects have been completed for Midwest Generation (fabrication of activated carbon injection manifolds for a power plant), for Air Products (nitrogen pipe fabrication for AK Steel in Middletown, Ohio), and Calgon Carbon Corp. (activated carbon conveying lines and booster air piping for a process facility).

“The shop’s primary focus is to fabricate piping spools to support Graycor Industrial’s projects and perform fabrication that supports our project installations,” said Chris Puacz, construction manager, Graycor Industrial. “The benefits to having our own fabrication shop include control of delivery sequence, schedule, cost and quality,” Puacz explained.

The shop has approximately 17,000 square feet of space with 15,500 square feet for cutting, fit up and tack, and welding stations. The shop can accommodate 20 work stations.

“The shop utilizes some state-of-the-art technology,” Puacz reported. “We have two of the newest technology micro-wire inert gas (MIG) welding machines with an integrated flume vacuum system. These welding machines do not produce the normal welding splatter from a MIG gun because the voltage is adjusted continuously within milliseconds. The flumes and particles are vacuumed at the nozzle of the gun, eliminating most the hazards from the operator,” Puacz explained. The shop also utilizes 300-amp inverters for tack-up operations. “All four of our machines can also be used for tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding and shielded metal arc (SMA) welding.”
