Graycor Industrial's power group retrofits second Ohio plant for American Electric Power.

BRILLIANT, OH (September 2009) — Graycor Industrial Constructors Inc. is currently retrofitting American Electric Power’s (AEP) 630-megawatt Unit 3 at the power producer’s plant in Brilliant, Ohio. The environmental project includes construction of a wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) system to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. The majority of work is scheduled to be completed in 2009 with final duct tie-ins and remaining work scheduled during 2011.

“Two of the considerations in awarding this project to Graycor Industrial were their prior experience and excellent safety record on a similar AEP project," said Dick Aeberli, construction site manager, AEP Cardinal. "We are very pleased with Graycor's site team commitment to safe work practices, which is AEP's first and foremost goal,” he added.

In spring 2009, Graycor Industrial completed a two-phase environmental retrofit at AEP’s 1,745-megawatt, coal-fired generation facility in Conesville, Ohio, located 70 miles east of Columbus. Both the Conesville and Brilliant projects are being managed by Graycor Industrial’s Coraopolis, Pa., office, located just outside of Pittsburgh and led by Larry DiCicco, general manager, Graycor Industrial.

“This will be the first generating station in North America to utilize a hyperbolic cooling tower as the chimney for the processed flue gas,” said Jerry Matheis, senior project manager, Graycor Industrial. “This eliminates the need to construct a waste gas stack for the flue gas to exit,” he added.

More than 1,700 tons of structural steel and 65,000 linear feet of interconnecting process piping (more than 12 miles) are being utilized for this project, which includes construction of six structures. This is challenging considering the project has a small staging area. “Due to space constraints, a great deal of planning and coordination goes into staging for materials and mechanical work,” said Rich Brown, assistant project manager, Graycor Industrial. “In addition, our work is spread over three separate sites more than a mile apart, which requires a great deal of communication,” he added.
