CATLETTSBURG, KY (November 2009) — Pittsburgh-based Calgon Carbon Corporation, a global leader in services and solutions for making water and air safer and cleaner, called upon Graycor Industrial Constructors Inc. in June of this year to expand the company’s manufacturing capabilities at their Catlettsburg, Ky., facility. The project, completed in October, included new structural steel and mechanical installations of a grinding mill, as well as associated equipment and piping installations.
The equipment grinds granular activated carbon (GAC) to a fine powdered activated carbon (FPAC) in order to be used in activated carbon injection systems which power producers use to reduce noxious Mercury emissions at power generating stations.
“We were impressed with Graycor’s sophisticated project controls and management team, as well as their ability to self-perform complex piping work,” said Mike Dahm, engineering manager, Calgon. “We are pleased that this challenging project was completed on schedule, within budget and safely,” he added.
The Graycor Industrial team tracked the entire project using software applications Primavera P6 Web and Contracts Manager. “These Web-based applications helped us maximize productivity and track project progress,” explained Chris Puacz, construction manager, Graycor Industrial.
“Our base of operations in nearby Ashland, Ky., allowed us to mobilize our workforce quickly,” added Randy Clark, project manager, Graycor Industrial. The company’s work in the Ohio River Valley region includes projects for clients such as Air Products, AK Steel and Weirton Steel. “In addition, our team paid special attention to material cost savings for the client as well as delivery installation and erection schedules that were key to this project,” he added. “In order to lower our cost, provide a quicker turnaround and deliver a higher quality product, we fabricated the carbon steel conveying lines and booster air piping out of our fabrication shop in Northwest Indiana.”
For decades, Graycor Industrial has provided construction services across the country, which often includes self-perform piping work, to process and refinery clients such as BP, Cargill, Corn Products and Praxair, to name a few.
