HOMEWOOD, IL (July 2009) — For nine consecutive years, Graycor has held a series of safety excellence workshops, also known as Safety Boot Camp, each spring. This year, Graycor subsidiaries Graycor Industrial Constructors Inc. and Graycor Construction Company Inc. joined forces for a series of meetings and interactive demonstrations highlighting safe work practices.

“For a number of years now, the operating companies have held separate safety workshops in order to address their specific safety needs often dependent on the type of work they do,” said Jeff Walden, director, safety, Graycor Companies. “This year, a number of the topics were appropriate for both commercial and industrial — excavation and trenching, working in live environments, fire extinguisher safety, crane safety and rigging, accident/incident investigation, and personal protection equipment (PPE) — so we combined the two groups for two days of workshops and interactive demonstrations,” he explained.

The Safety Boot Camp was held on May 29 and June 12. As an option, scaffold competent person training was held on the day prior to each of the Safety Boot Camp sessions, and all participants received a copy of the new 2008 OSHA Safety Standards manual. Several employees delivered the information sessions.

“The demonstrations seem to be a big hit mostly due to the fact that people are able to interact and ask questions about the topic right there on the spot,” said Ted Vrehas, construction manager and safety committee chairman, Graycor Industrial. “In addition, the demonstrations reinforce safe work practices and encourage team work in regards to safety,” added Brian Feckler, project manager and safety committee chairman, Graycor Construction.

The Safety Boot Camp sessions are designed and coordinated by Graycor Industrial and Graycor Construction’s respective safety committees. This year’s sessions were held for the second year in a row at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso, Ind. In total, more than 250 employees attended the safety trainings.
