Hydrogen plant underway in Northern Indiana.

WHITING, IN (August 2009) — More than 15 months have passed since Graycor Industrial Constructors Inc. began constructing a new hydrogen plant for Praxair at its Whiting, Ind., facility. The multimillion-dollar project will enable Praxair to supply hydrogen to BP’s Whiting, Ind., refinery. BP, one of the world’s largest oil and gas firms, will use the hydrogen in production of ultra-low-sulfur gasoline and diesel fuels.

The new plant will serve to refine the oil sands being shipped from Canada to BP’s Whiting refinery. In addition, the new plant will also supply hydrogen to other customers in Northern Indiana.

“By selecting Graycor Industrial as our construction partner to build our hydrogen facility, we knew we were enlisting the management expertise needed to execute this challenging project in a difficult labor market,” said Dominic Cianchetti, HYCO Group - GSS, Praxair Inc. “Their ability to manage risk and mitigate potential problems was instrumental in positioning the project for a successful outcome,” he added.

“This is an exciting project for Graycor Industrial as Praxair is a new client,” said Mark Liston, general manager, Graycor Industrial. “Like most of our other clients, we hope to develop a long-term relationship with Praxair for years to come,” added Jim McElroy, general manager, Graycor Industrial. Praxair is the largest industrial gases company in North and South America and one of the largest worldwide.

Work at the brownfield project site, where coke battery foundations once existed, began in April 2008 and is scheduled for July 2010 completion. The project calls for Graycor Industrial’s team to construct two steam methane reformers (SMRs), as well as an office/maintenance building, a water purification building, pressure swing adsorption structures and multiple pre-engineered metal buildings.

The project scope also includes site work, underground utilities, foundations, rotating equipment, structural steel, complete piping and electrical/control systems.

“There are multiple activities being performed in close proximity to each other, which require vigorous planning and precise execution,” said Greg Bond, senior project manager. “Coordination of lifts and setting of equipment also requires a significant amount of pre-planning due to the amount of equipment being used on site.”
