Coke oven battery rehab completed for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel.

FOLLANSBEE, WV (December 2007) This winter, Graycor Industrial Constructors completed rehabilitation of the No. 8 Coke Battery at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.’s Follansbee, W.Va. plant. The project, which began in July 2005, was performed for Mountain State Carbon – a joint venture between Wheeling-Pittsburgh and Severstal North America.

Scope of work for the two-phased project included rebuilding complete through-wall repairs of 48 oven walls and end flue repairs for the remaining 32 walls. Also included were structural and collecting main upgrades, installation of gas collection piping, and replacement of coke side and pusher side benches. The project’s second phase included utilizing an innovative method to perform a 10-wall repair. Two areas (10 walls wide) were removed, rebuilt and installed while half of the battery remained in operation.

“Because the battery was operational during construction, work on the north half required significant coordination with plant operations in order to schedule repair work,” said Joe Brockly, superintendent, Graycor Industrial. “While rebuilding, it was very important to keep the walls hot to prevent contraction from occurring. This heat requirement made demolition and rebuilding activities very challenging,” he added. “This project was one of Graycor Industrial’s largest performed with our own forces,” said Tom Muchesko, senior vice president. The Graycor Industrial team self-performed battery brick work while maintaining heat in the work areas during construction, which required monitoring and adjusting temperatures around the clock.

Past work for Wheeling-Pittsburgh includes multi-phased construction of a new melt shop in Steubenville, Ohio, and repairs to the No. 4 Reheat Furnace and 80-inch Hot Strip Mill at its Mingo Junction, Ohio, plant.
