General Cinema (now owned by Kerasotes Theatres) contracted Graycor to demolish an existing Goldblatt′s store, which stood vacant for nearly six years, and construct in its place a new 14-screen, 4,000-seat megaplex theatre. Plans for the theater also called for construction of an onsite six-level parking garage, accommodating nearly 1,000 vehicles. Despite tight site conditions and close proximity to rush-hour traffic, nearby homes and a railroad running adjacent to the project site, City North 14, located on Western Avenue between Fullerton and Diversey, was successfully constructed on a fast-track schedule. The project, which was completed in less than nine months, was accomplished through close coordination between the contractor, architect and the City of Chicago. A great deal of preplanning went into site logistics on this zero lot line property, schedule coordination, materials delivery and installation, as well as impact on the surrounding community.
