Beta Steel Corp. recently called upon Graycor Industrial Constructors to perform system upgrades at their Portage, Ind., plant. A project to upgrade the coiler handling system was performed, which included installing a new downcoiler, two new walking beams, inspection station, and a pre-engineered metal building. Sheet piling, foundation demolition and new foundation installation were also performed. In addition, all air, cooling water, hydraulic and lubrication piping systems were installed.
Graycor’s team subsequently performed a foundations installation for a new cooling tower at the mini-mill where high-quality, hot-rolled steel bands are produced. Work included installing a new concrete sump and support and catch basins, as well as new foundations, installations and grouting for 15 new feed pumps.
Most recently, Graycor removed and replaced 82 crane runway girders in the Coil Handling Center, as well as removed existing crop shear and modified its foundation before installing new crop shear and piping at the Hot Strip Mill.
