ArcelorMittal — the world’s number one steel company — called upon Graycor Industrial Constructors to complete two emission control system installation projects at their Burns Harbor and East Chicago, Ind., steelmaking and processing facilities. Both projects were completed to meet Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) Standards — technology-based air emission standards established under Title III of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments.
The two-phased, year-long installation project at the Burns Harbor plant was performed at the No. 1 Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) and consisted of erecting a baghouse and installing all associated ductwork and support steel, reinforcing the existing building, and relocating existing piping and electrical interferences. Work required the use of two massive cranes, each with a capacity of 1,000 tons — equipped with 560 feet of boom — to move extremely large and heavy ducts and install them into tight clearance areas.

Work at the East Chicago plant included installing the MACT scrubber system and all associated ductwork and support steel for the No. 4 BOF.
