Touted as the world’s largest reline currently underway, Graycor is performing a reline of Ispat Inland’s Blast Furnace No. 7 at the steelmaker’s East Chicago, Ind., facility. Work includes performing a bottom tap, demolishing the furnace lining and bottom, and installing a new hearth bottom and walls, tuyere, bosh refractory and staves in the bosh and stack. In addition, Graycor will remove and replace the lip ring and demolish and install the stove dome, hot blast main, bustle pipe lining and stove burner. Graycor is self-performing the boilermaker, ironworker, carpenter, bricklayer, laborer, operator, and teamster work.
The upgrade being completed on the 23-year-old blast furnace will extend its useful life for another 20 years. Graycor performed a reline of Blast Furnace No. 7 in 1993 and a mini-reline in 1987. In addition, Graycor recently completed furnace repairs to the facility’s Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 2, a reline of Blast Furnace No. 5 and repairs to the waste gas recirculation system.
Graycor also completed a mini-reline on No. 6 Blast Furnace at Ispat’s Plant 2 in just 29 days, logging over 80,000 craft hours without OSHA recordables or lost-time accidents.
