Graycor Construction completed 410,000 square feet of production, distribution and office space for Motorola in Arlington Heights, Ill. Initial occupancy of the structure took 14 months after ground- breaking. Motorola’s smooth, multi-phase move-in was all the more remarkable because the fast-track schedule required construction to proceed parallel with design development.
The project began with the removal of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of materials from the 20-acre site to obtain the desired elevation for the future source of Motorola’s most advanced mobile communications products. Graycor completed tenant build-out in this facility during the fall. The food service facility in the office building was fitted out to serve several hundred employees working in the production areas well before completion of the offices. This was accomplished with careful coordination and scheduling of work by the project team.
Simultaneous to completing the Motorola Subscriber Facility in Arlington Heights, Graycor dispatched a team to another Motorola project in Grayslake, Ill. This assignment called for the rapid renovation and upgrade of an 85,000-square-foot existing building.
In response to Motorola’s urgent need for more space, Graycor was on site one day after the request to start construction of the project. In less than two months, the space was gutted and rebuilt and Motorola began production. Graycor transferred the sense of urgency to all the trades and together they met the completion date.
