Long-time client ArcelorMittal — the world’s number one steel company — recently called on Graycor to complete an emergency reline of the No. 1 Blast Furnace at their steelmaking facility in Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, located one hour north of Ixtapa on the Pacific Ocean.
The project, which took approximately two months to complete, included drilling the salamander and removing and installing the furnace refractory (hearth bottom, hearth walls, tuyere surround and bosh lining) from the bottom through the bosh. In addition, the team replaced four rows of bosh and stack staves (36 per row), along with 30 random staves damaged during the breakdown. Work also included replacing the stave piping on the exterior of the furnace and the furnace top lip ring, as well as performing a partial top equipment change.
The project’s complexities and unique challenges required the combined effort and involvement of several Graycor companies: Graycor Industrial, Graycor Blasting and Graycor International. A particular challenge included overcoming the language barrier between the Graycor Industrial and Graycor Blasting supervisors and the Mexican workforce, which was solved utilizing Graycor International’s bilingual resources. Another challenge involved coordinating the project’s materials from destinations including the U.S., China, Poland, Brazil, France and Mexico.
